Why does some cedar have the cedar smell and not others. I would like to finish the inside of a cabin with it. Is it available?
Cedar can loose some of its scent over the course of time but when lightly sanded, you bring some of the natural oils back to the surface and open up new pores to release the scent back into the room. This is particularly true when using aromatic cedar. As for the second part of your question, we have many different styles of sidings that could be used on the inside of a cabin. Tongue and groove v-joint would be the most common. They are available in both 4 inch and 6 inch widths. Feel free to call us for a square foot prices based on the amounts you may need. Thanks for your interest in our products and we hope to hear from you in the near future.

Hi there, Do you have in stock, 4x4 or 4x8 cedar lattice with the 1" privacy openings - you know the lattice with the smaller see through holes?
The lattice with that small a hole is called privacy plus and was usually done in much thinner strips of lath. We stopped carrying that product many years ago because they couldn't stand the test of time. We do however carry a few others that are much thicker(3/8-3/4 inch thick lath)depending on your personal tastes! (1 1/2-2 1/4 INCH OPENING). We carry a few different grades of 4x4 and usually have so 4x8 in stock but none this time of year. we can order just about anything if you need it. Feel free to call us if you have any questions. Thanks

hi folks, i have an 19 year old cedar sided home. i've only been here for 9 months but i don't believe it's been maintained to any degree over the years. the siding is approx 12" wide and runs horizontally. it has darkened over the years and i'd like to restore it back to a nice original light orange / light red finish with a clear coating. can you tell me how to start?... meaning... "do i power wash it or sand blast it or replace it? if i can re-finish it, what coating do i need to re-apply? can you send me back a 'step by step'?? thanks in advance, Curt.
Pressure washing may clean it up depending on how long its been overdue for a recoat... Sometimes you will have to have it sand or soda blasted. After this process, you will most likely want a 2 or 3 coat finish applied. Depending on your exposure, this will give you 5-7 years... If you want to replace this siding, it is in the 4.50 per square foot range... 15/16x12 knotty rough face bevel. Feel free to call us if you have any more questions. Thanks

I am planning to make outdoor garden benches for my rental triplex in Calgary. I am thinking of a gable roof covered bench with side walls for wind protection. About 6ft long.Do you have any plans or suggestions? I have built an out-door skating rink for one of the tenants children, and therefore am looking for weather protection with the bench. ...Thank You,cliffo
ah, difficult to answer without pictures, but imagine a 6 ft bench that is supported by 4 4x4 posts that are 8 ft tall, besides supporting the bench the posts can used as anchors to nail on 1x6 tongue and groove cedar on both the sides and back for protection from wind, the posts supporting the front of bench could be 1 ft shorter to give a single pitch for water to run off. Best to come on down and we can show you on paper

What wood do you have available for Saunas - other than Cedar ? Which one would you recommend and why ? It is a 6.5' x 8' Sauna. Thanks, Scott
we only carry cedar for saunas, you need to use clear material (no knots) and getting clear pine or birch can get really expensive because it is hard to find. Cedar is also the best product due to its natural oils that keep it from moisture.

We are remodelling our cedar log home and have a 13.5" support column to cover. We would like to put cedar on top of the column. Would you have 1x16 available for this or something else that may work?
We only stock cedar up to 11 1/4" wide,we can special order wider material but we would need to know how much you need before we could price. Also you would need 3 to 4 weeks to bring in.

i have a customer who wants me to stain a new cedar fence they just put in. the guy who installed it told them to wait to stain it (let it weather a few months). winter is almost here and i would like to know if i can actually stain it right away or is it best to let it weather and turn gray then power wash it and stain it in the spring. i have read posts about "mill glaze" and im wondering if that will be a factor when im planning to use an oil stain
The fence can be stained 2 weeks or so after installation, provided the weather is going to be above 10 degrees when using oil based products. If you choose to wait until spring and there is evidence of some greying then the boards will have to be power washed.

I am replacing the metal soffit from my house and I would like to have cedar in that area... can you please tell me what style of wood is recommended and how do you vent it. I notice you have a large selection of gable end vents on your website, is that all that is needed, is there no product to vent the soffit area?
I have 1x4 and 1x6 t&g cedar in both knotty and clear as well as vented soffit t&g sorry no picks but have some in stock if you would like to come down and see it

I'm building a rather large gate to match a client's existing fence and was wondering what your opinion is of the maximum span for a cedar gate. Right now I'm looking at about 9.5' for each side (19' total) fastened to a 6x6 buried 4.5' deep (sonotubed with 3 bags of quikrete in each) supported by a wheel at the end of each gate. Just wanted to make sure that I'm not making a big mistake by building something this wide. Thanks for the advice.
the only thing i might be concerned about the gate is wider that a regular fence panel and might sag in the middle otherwise there is nothing wrong with building that size of gate.

Hello Cedar Shop: We are making a walk in closet and would like to line it with cedar. Is there such a thing as cedar beadboard sheets? Do you have them? If not, what do you recommend for lumber? I am thinking 1x6. Thanks. Heather & Ray
There is no cedar bead board unfortunately, but we do have 1x4 and 1x6 t&g cedar in both knotty and clear.

Should we be finishing our cedar deck in this Calgary snowy weather? The final construction on our deck will be done this week by our landscaper. The concern is that if left over the winter untreated it will grey, and create a look we really don't want. The look we would like to acheive is a two tone stain, a darker outside edge on two planks and skirt. and a lighter inside. What options do we have? I am so very confused.
You can wait to stain until spring your will only slightly weather and we do have a product that will bring the color back if it does grey to much

We are putting a cedar deck across the front of the house. The nailer is attached to concrete for most of the span, but about 8 feet is wood as there is a sunken entry. Does the flashing for this section need to go on before the decking (from house to joist) or do we put it on after the decking (2x6 cedar)is in place? The siding will be replaced in the next month so we want it to be ready for them.
When you apply the flashing it should go 3 inches up the wall and over the ledger, if you have joins in the flashing be sure to use some silicone to seal the joins, then apply your decking.

I have a cedar fence that was installed 2 years ago. I have not stained it and was planning to let it fade and age naturally. I am now thinking that I may want to stain it. I like the look of natural stained cedar. Can I stain my fence after leaving it unstained for a few years. Some parts have started to grey but it still looks good when it is wet. What do you recommend?
Yes you can stain, as long as it's not completely grey. If it is you will need to use a product called woodwash which will remove the grey, than you can finish your fence. Thanks

I like to cook on the bbq using cedar planks (cedar plank salmon for example) Can I use cedar fence boards and just cut them up. Is the cedar fence board clean and free of any chemicals, or have they been washed with anything? The cedar boards that can be bought at the bbq shops are too thin and very expensive.
Yes, you can use any cedar. Cedar has it's own natural oils in it so it doesn't get washed with any chemicals.

Hi, we attempted to stain our deck with a Behr product and don't like it at all. Is sanding the easiest and safest way to get that stain off? The deck installer originally recommended your outfit but it is a ways away from us so we went to home depot. If not from your shop, where would you recommend we purchase from? We like the look of wet pressure treated wood and would like a natural looking stain on the brown tone side of things. Thanks for your help. Robin
The easiest way to remove a finish is with a stripping agent. We carry a bio degradeable produt called stripex, Apply and power wash off.
