We put in a new cedar deck a year ago (Victoria) and are wondering what, if anything, we should put on it. I looked at the Lifetime Wood Treatment and tried a small amount on a piece of the cedar, but am not sure that this is the right product. I see that you mention Sikkens products more often than the Lifetime product and am wondering what would be the best choice. Can the deck just be left to weather naturally? Thanks
Life time wood treatment is a product that weathers the wood to a patina grey color right away.Without any treatment on your deck the natural sun will eventually do the same thing.A south facing deck will weather faster than a north facing deck because of its sun light exposure.Lifetime is often used when decks are on south and east side of house and the consumer wants the same look.It is not a sealant from water nor does it have any fungal protection. It is a one time application to make the deck look evenly patined right away. Sikkens is a product that protects the wood from sun ,moisture, mold, mildew and brings out the beauty of the grain. It does however require maintenance, again depending on how much sun it recieves and its proximity to the ground. If you like the patina look use the lifetime or wait for the sun to do somewhat the same thing. If you love the look af the grain of cedar and its color variations then use the Sikkens

Hi, I am considering using cedar to build an ornamental box, the dimensions are 4" X 3" X 20" . The stock that I will be using will be either 1/4 or 1/2 inch. Do you think that I would have a warping problem? Thank-you, Len
You should have no problem with 1/2 material for your project, however, it would be a good idea to put a stain or clear coat on it to prevent cracking and warping.

We have just installed a 6x6 cedar beam in our house. It was freshly cut and was perfect. Weeks later and some drying it is cracking quite badly. We are now thinking of replacing with a new beam,is there anything we can do to prevent the cracking from happening again or fill the cracks with something in the original beam.
The only thing I can recommended is that you put a stain on it immediately..Three coats of the Sikkens product will help prevent cracking.

We are thinking of buying a house that has untreated cedar on it's exterior and is not too nice looking. Can we stain untreated weathered cedar?
You can stain untreated weathered cedar but the problem with doing so is it won't look that great when finished..I would recommend that you use a Bio wash stripper on it first to get the cedar back to it's original color then stain it.. http://www.bfdist.com/products/Bio%252dWash-Stripex%252dL-Deck-%26-Siding-Finish-Strippers.html

Is there any reason that cedar and ground contact pressure treated lumber cannot be joined together? Do the chemicals in the Pressure treated cause any type of bad reaction in the cedar? Thanks! Jim
They can be joined together..I say this only because most cedar decks are supported with pressure treated frames.

I am building a screen porch on an approved concrete slab with footers. I want to use 4x4 cedar posts 4s4 spaced 44 inches apart. A 4x10 beam will sit on the posts supporting a 12 x 24 hipped roof. I need to know if the cedar posts will support the roof load. My building inspector accepts 4x4 pt posts. Are the cedar posts comparable to pt for strength in a simple porch construction like this one?
Gathered from the information you supplied us the support beams (such as your 4x10)should be fir..Cedar is not a structural wood and should not be used as support beams.

We are renovating an older home and have bought unfinished cedar shakes to apply to half of it. Is it necessary to apply a stain/preservative to the whole shake before putting it on the house. We have heard that the best way is to dip them. With fall here it would be so much more convenient to put the cedar on the house and spray the preservative/stain afterward - possible?
It is not necessary to prestaing shakes..Cedar shakes can last 30 years with stain or not..Yes, there is no problem with spraying the shakes once they're installed on the house.

Hi there - my husband and I are building a vacation home in the gulf islands on the west coast. We want to have a cedar tongue and groove ceiling but since a woodstove is our only source of heat, the house will not be heated unless we are there. Will the temperature fluctuations cause the boards to warp. Some warping is ok because it isn't structural but obviously too much would be a problem. Thanks for your advice!
There will be no problems with warping. T&G Cedar would be perfect.

We are repairing our sloped roof with red cedar shingles, and I want to "age" them to blend in better with the existing grayish shingles.....what product should I use for this? Thanks very much! We live in Vail, CO.

We are currently working on our cedar deck and are about 80% complete. We have heard differing opinions about whether to stain the deck now or whether to leave it until next summer. What is your opinion on this and, if we do leave it to next summer, will this damage the cedar deck boards?
If you wait till next summer your boards will grey a little bit. Waiting will not damage the boards. If you do wait you will need to sand your deck to get the grey look off the boards. Then you can stain.

I have hosue that is fully sided with cedar shakes and am trying to decide which is the best option for treating it. The shakes have been on for about 2 years now. Do I leave it natural? Treat it with product? Paint it? Basically what I am looking for is what is going to last the longest with the least amount of maintenance becasue it is such a large area. Thanks
Cedar Shakes will last for 25 to 30 years whether you paint them or stain them. Paint or stain will help a bit because the shakes are not taking on as much moisture but if you want the least amount of maintance I would just let them weather and not worry about it.

I have some scrap pieces or Trex Accents left over from my deck build. I would like to use these scraps to resurface an outdoor table. My three questions then: Am I able to purchase one or two more pieces that are no longer than 8 feet each? Can I cut these boards using my mitre saw? How do I create the bullnose edging that the builder put onto my deckboards? (router, belt sander, etc). Thanks
The shortest the Trex boards come in is 12 footers..Yes, you can cut them with any saw that will cut wood..Yes, I would use a router if you're going to bullnose the edges.

Doing some renos at the house. Keith-built home in Parkland with 5/16" x 12" fibreboard siding. Can I buy this somewhere. New cedar deck built (at grade) and I would like to protect it and maintain a cedar look. Is the Sikkens product "Cetol SRD - Cedar" the one to use? Should I sand it first to remove "mill glaze"? Thanks, Bob
I do stock 15/16 cedar siding, cedar is the only thing I stock it in..Sanding is really only recommended on cedar decks..For the siding you would use Cetol log and siding and for the deck you would use the SRD product.

i built a deck last fall with cedar planks and was told to let age a year before staining. now i would like to know how to clean and prep the wood and what stain would you recommend to be long lasting and keep a natural finish.
To clean the wood you can use a wood wash called bio wash, we carry it...As for the stain there's nothing that will last for more than 2 years..I would recommend using Sikkens SRD 996, it's the lightest color the Sikkens line comes in.

You're looking at around 17.55 a foot for that style fence..So 2457.00 would be close to the cost.

Hi there I just finished building a 450 sqft deck. The frame is pressure treated and the decking and rails are WRC. I would love to preserve the look, what product can I use to finish it to give me a wet look. The deck looks great after some rain. I was going to use the thompson transparent sealer but I read the article here that that was not the best choice. Also the deck is 8 feet off the ground Any advise would be appreciated Thanks Mehrnoosh Charlottetown Prince Edward Island
We carry the Sikkens line..If your deck is that high off the ground you could use a product called Sikkens Cetol Dek..There are several different colors you can use.. sikkens.com Good Luck!

Hi - we are looking to purchase a 30 year old cedar home with a wood treated basement. Our concerns are the durability of wood treatment and the safety of it, as far as CCA and the leaching of any type of poisons. We would appreciate your views on it. Thankyou
I would not be concerned with CCA wood in your basement, especially if you were planning on finishing it with drywall to cover it all over.

Hi : how long does it take for cedar to turn grey ? What is involved in getting the orginal color back ? Thanks
That depends on how much sunlight the deck is getting, south facing decks can fade out completly in 6 months.Sand with 60 grit sandpaper to bring color back or you can use the cleaner Woodwash.

I'm looking to install my cedar deck, and it's in partial shaded area, and only 10" off the ground. I have no experience to tell me the moisture content of the boards. I've been told to install them without gaps. What would your recommendation be? If there is a gap, what is the minimum gap that should be installed?
Decks 10" off the ground have to have the boards gapped so moisture under the deck will have a place to go.Ground level or even up to 2ft high decks should be installed with 1/8 inch spacing so the deck can dry after rain or snow.

I have cedar handrails on my porches. Do I need to sand them before reapplying clear finish to it? The cedar is turning grayish in spots.
Yes you have to sand with 60 to 80 grit sandpaper to remove all grey areas on the boards.Clear finish does not hold up well in out door areas when the wood is exposed to the sun.Again have a look at this website sikkens.com

I have BEHR rawhide cedar tint on my cedar home. How can I remove it ? I heard corn cob blasting is a way to go, but we don't have it in Anchorage Ak. Is there any product around that I can change over to that is similar to the rawhide product? And what other ways are ther to strip my house down to natural wood?
Sand blasting is also sometimes used, also there is a product called Stripex that is srayed onto the siding let sit for twenty min. and then wash off with a power washer. We have tryed many products on cedar and have found the best durable product to be Sikkens.Have a look at there site @ sikkens.com

Tuesday, June 21, 2011 Hello Cedar Shop Experts, My husband and I built our deck last summer (2010). The framework is pressure treated and the deck, steps and rails are cedar. It was recommended to us to use Thompsons WaterSeal (clear). We followed the directions to the letter. Be sure the wood was completely dry before applying, only apply one coat, and make sure there was at least 2-3 days of dry weather for it to cure. We thought we were doing something good for our deck. And it seemed like a good idea until after it was applied and it was too late. It completely changed the look of our cedar deck, and when it rained the water would bead for a bit and then pool in areas. When it dried there were dirty water marks everywhere! In a matter of weeks our deck boards looked like it had been around for years. We were so disappointed. We decided to leave it until this summer to try and remedy the ugliness Thompsons WaterSeal has caused. So far our only plan of action is to wait for the rain to stop and then rent a belt sander and try to get the deck back to its unfinished state. Do you have any recommendations or suggestions about what steps we should take, and maybe what type of product we can use to protect if from the elements but won't make our cedar deck look awful? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yes I have had customers complaine about this product dozens of times before. You are correct, renting a sander and removing the stains and wax from the Thompsons to get the original cedar back is the only way to go.Be sure to ask for 60 or 80 grit sand paper for your sander. After completion allow the wood 2 days to recover. We carry the Sikkens line of deck products and depending on your decks hieght from the ground determens which one to use.If your deck is 2 ft or less from the ground you would apply 1 coat of Sikkens SRD.If the deck is higher than that and the boards are spaced properly you can use the 2 coat Sikkens deck finish.

Hello, I was told by my landscaper to have a look at your products. Unfortunately, you are not open on Sunday and I work until 7 to 7 during the weekdays, the earliest I can come by your store is next Saturday. I wanted to find out how much a 10x10 cedar pergolas starts at? That way I can have a very general idea as to whether or not to consider having one in my landscaping plans. Thank you for your help. Amy
We do not carry prefab pergolas. We do carry all the raw materials to build one and also have a book you can look at to show many different styles to inspire you.

We have a cabin in the northwoods of Wisconsin and want to upgrade our dock. We want to use cedar but also want to have minimum maintenance issues over the years. Thinking about your "lifetime" graying product vs putting on a color stain. With the latter, does that require a sealant too? And how often would it need to be redone? Is the lifetime graying product really a one-time process? Thank you for your expertise. Lynn Hartmann
Life time wood treatment is a product that adds a weathered patina look to your deck "immediatley".Untreated cedar will eventually turn a simalar color over time anyways. If you have ever seen a cabin or house with a cedar shingle or shake roof you will know what I am talking about. The cedar roofs last 30 to 40 years with no coatings at all because of the rot resistant oils contained in the wood fibre. It is the perfect wood to use for a dock however I would not recomend putting any sealant or uv protection because you will have to maintain the process yearly.

I have a 30 year old house with cedar siding. I want to have it painted this summer, but there are a lot of places where big knots have fallen out, and also two areas over windows that woodpeckers have ravaged, rows of big holes. Can a person have selected cedar boards replaced on their house, is this a practical approach? Do you do this kind of work?
Cedar bevel siding is very easy to replace as long as it was installed properly.Just remove the nails and let it slide down and remove pc.Cut new pc to length, slide it under above row and nail it in.The important thing to remember for anyone installing bevel siding is to make sure your nail goes through the thickest part of the siding but not through the siding below. You see bevel siding always overlaps the pc below and usually covers about one to one halve inches of the siding below it.Therefore the nail must go two inches up from the thickest part of the siding. This allows the siding to shrink and expand independantly.

I just finished building a Costco outdoor cedar play structure and wanted to add an additional cedar floor and rail. Do you have pre-stained cedar, 1x4 and 2x4, or do I need to stain it myself? I have spent 15-20 hours building this thing and would like to finish the rest with as little effort as possible :O) Cheers, John
All our cedar is a raw product. There are too many different colors to choose from to pre stain anything for stock. We do carry the sikkens line of stain, and the 1x4 and 2x4 you need is in stock at all times. Thanks

Hello Expert! I want to build a 12x10' ground level deck which means I have to use 2x6 joists spanning 10' with 12" c-c spacing. This seems far for 2x6 joists so I want to double them up. Will this provide appropriate strength or do I need to add another row of concrete piles half way? Currently I have 3 piles spaced at 6' at the 10' mark. Thanks
That is cutting it close, rather than doubling every joist you should be fine with just doubling the two outside joists and perhaps the middle one aswell

I have a cedar shake roof, 12 years old, which I believe has UV damage, causing the shakes to "shed" grey fibrous material every times it rains. How do I treat this and what products are available? I am also interested in a fire retardant.
Cedar shake roofs don't require any maintenance.Trying to keep a coating on roof shakes would be very expensive and time consuming. The grey fibrous material you speak of is the wood cells coming loose after the sun burns off the natural glue {lignum} holding them together. The same thing happens with asphalt shingles.Fire retardands are sort of the same problem in that they will have to be reapplied yearly because of the sun ,water, and snow roofs have to deal with.

Hello - I have a new cedar deck constructed with your product - it looks great and I am very happy with the quality of the decking boards I have applied Sikkens Cetol SRD after a light sanding. The deck is now very muddy after the past few weeks of rain and kids and dogs running around. What is the best method or product to clean the deck? I own a pressure washer, but I don't want to damage the wood or the finish I just applied. Thanks!
If we are just talking mud then spray deck with garden hose, agitate with a push broom and wash off.Grease or tree saplings have to be washed with t.s.p. and warm water {2 tablespoons tsp per 1 gallon of water}Power washer can be used as long as the sprayer is not hitting wood directly, keep sprayer head at 45 degree angle when cleaning so that water has to travel 3ft before indirectly hitting wood.

My house was built in the mid 1970's with Western Red Cedar interior paneling. It was hung with the rough side out. Previous owner covered this up with cheap paneling to lighten the interior. The house has an open loft area so the walls are 16ft. high. I removed the paneling and most of the wood is fine with the exception of a few damaged boards that need to be replaced. The big problem is a large area of dark almost black colored panels on the main interioe wall. How do I fix that? I love the natural wood, it was not finished. Can I lighten all of the wood back to a more natural light finish? It's really dark in here....help! P.S. I am a single lady trying to fix this.
Difficult problem you have there. If it was exterior walls you could use a product called woodwash. You apply it on with a brush let it sit on the wall then power wash off with water. Not so easy to do when done indoors. If it was smooth wood it could be belt sanded to remove the dark wood.I guess the only way to do it is remove the darkened wood carefully and woodwash them in the yard and then mail them back up if possible or just replace them.

Re: Semi transparent cedar stain We have applied a few coats of semi transparent stain on our cedar deck and unfortunately the horizontal boards now have uneven coloring. How do we go about stripping the top of the horizontal boards and applying some type of clear finish, to bring our deck back to the new cedar color? We love the color of the cedar stain that is on the vertical boards of our deck. Hope you can help us. Thanks, Fred and Kathy
There is a product called Stripex that you spray onto your dry deck, let sit for 10 to 15 minutes and then powerwash off with water. The product is biodegradable however it is recomended you presoak with water any organic plants and grass that is nearby.Let the deck dry for 3 to 5 days of nice weather. Then do a quick sand with 60 or 80 grit sandpaper. This will allow your stain to absorb into the wood more evenly. Your horizontal planks will require more upkeep than your vertical boards because of extra traffic and direct sun exposure.

I know the Brasilia was discontinued last year, so what I do depends on what I can find. What Brasilia do you have in stock currently? Please feel free to email the answer at jabou@shaw.ca. Thank you very much. Jason

Can you please e-mail me a price for 1x4 smoothe T& G also what you recommend for Staining and how much per gallon and how many gallon we need to cover 1036 sq ft of siding The versatile cedar T&G product can be used in almost any application. Soffit, siding, fencing and wainscoting are just a few of the projects that are enhanced by the beauty of cedar. T&G Comes in a 1x4 and 1x6 board. Its finish is a smooth or knotty with the option to use the rough or smooth side
Wow you should work here,1x4 tg knotty cedar comes in 8 to 16 ft lengths and costs $3.00/SQ FT,shorter lengths are usually available for 20% less. Sikkens cetol products average around 400 sq ft per coat based on 3 coats on the smooth side.Rough side would average arount 250 to 300 sq ft.It is always recomended to put the first cat on all 4 sides before installing the siding.

We will be sprucing up our faded and stained cedar shakes. Do you recommend painting or staining, or does it even make a difference. Should the product be rolled on or applied with a sprayer for best results. Thanks
You did not mention if this is for a roof or wall on house. If this is for a wall the cedar must be cleaned with a woodwash and powerwasher to remove the grey and restore the original color of the cedar.Simply putting stain or paint over top of weathered wood will not last long.Once the wood is restored and dryed stain it by spraying it and then backbrush. If using solid stain a primer would be recomended

Hi, I was thinking of doing a small project in my house where I would line the interior of my closet with cedar. I was checking some other websites and found some references to aromatic cedar. What type of cedar would you recommend for for this type of project?
Aromatic cedar is the perferred wood to use for this application

I am going to be using an old cedar chest for an outdoor vegetable garden box. I recently sanded it down to where the entire thing is nothing but cedar. Before, there was like a poplar wood glued to the outside of the chest? I have a couple questions though... 1). Is this a bad idea? 2). Can I paint the outside of the cedar chest to match my deck? If so, do I have to use anything special? 3). Will I have to drill holes in the bottom of the cedar chest for drainage? ( I understand your not gardeners, but I thought I would ask) Thank You! ~Nicole
Raw cedar is the best wood to use for vegetable gardens. However not knowing what kind of glue was used to join the poplar wood might be a concern, also be advised the poplar will not last long exposed to sun and water.Solid cedar would be ideal for your vegetable box

I have (2) 30' boat docks (30' long/6' wide and 30' long/4' wide) at my cottage and want to replace the current 2"x6" decking. It was suggested to me that you could provide advice as to my question. I am considering replacing the decks with: a) 2"x6" pressure treated green decking boards b) 5/4" x 7" utility grade cedar decking boards My questions are: 1) will the 5/4" x 6" utility cedar provide enough strength and durability verses the 2" x 4" pressure treated?? 2) will the utility grade cedar decking weather well (eg. resist rot, fungus and wood boring bugs, as these docks will be exposed to a lot of water ??? 3) what would you suggest I do of these (2) alternatives I am 70 years old and have install and replace these docks each year (so weight is a factor for me) and would really appreciate your honest input! Thanks so much! Trevor Hayden
We stock only select tight knot cedar in 5/4.No a utility grade cedar in 5/4 will be nowhere near as structual as a 2x4 preasure treated.Appearance grade Cedar will not rot as quickly as preasure treated wood.Coastal cedar will be the most rot resistant

Hello I have an existing cedar fence, the post that I am replacing is made of 4” x 6” fir. I wanted to keep the look of the cedar for the fence and was wondering would it be best to replace the rotted post with cedar or pressure treated lumber i.e. Cedar tone. If Cedar, is there a product that I can use to treat the portion of the post to be placed in the ground? What are your recommendation regarding the longevity of a Cedar post.?
Cedar can last as long as treated in the ground but you must ready your post hole in the proper fashion. Its important to use gravel in the botton of the hole for drainage... 4 to 5 inches. The use of gravel in the post hole is important when using any species of wood. You dont want the wood sitting in any pooled water because this will promote decay if saturated to long....

Do you recommend any particular "best" paint bread for cover staining cedar siding?
If its a solid stain you're looking for, the sikkens brand has a product called rubbol siding that is very affective. It can be mixed in many different colors

Hello, we have just purchased a house that the neighbours tell us has Haida Skirl siding. Three boards on the front are pulling away. The boards are about 14" wide and run the entire front of the house, maybe 16 feet in length. They don't appear to be cracking rather the bottoms appear not to be fastened correctly and are pulling away. Is this something we could re attach with proper nails/screws (we suspect incorrect nails might have been used) or would we need to replace the boards. Thank you for your help. The Mitchells.
you should be able to re attach the siding, the nails that should be used are called hot galvinized oval head siding nails.

We built our cedar deck 5 years ago. Since I wanted the silvery patina look, we did not finish or seal it with anything. Two years ago we finished it with a clear sealer but that is practically all worn off. Now I would like to treat it with the LifeTime product and am wondering if I can go ahead and apply the LifeTime directly to the deck as is (with some feathery grey and some raw portions of the cedar) or should I powerwash the whole thing first with the Woodwash product to get as close to bare wood as possible, before applying the LifeTime?
You need to make sure all the old finish is off before you use the lifetime product it needs to soak in so powerwashing is the way to go

Hi there, When installing shingles on a roof. would you strap the roof or put plywood down instead? And if you straped it how close together do the rows of straping need to be? Thanks Pete
Straping as opposed to plywood allows better ventilation for the shingels to breath and dry after rain or snow.Depending on what exposure you want on the shingles determins how often you should strap, usually 5 to 6 inch exposure. This of course applies only to gazebos, and tool sheds. The down side of this is the roof does not have the same strength as it would have with plywood.

We have cedar siding on our house and we have birds that are making holes in the cedar. Everyone thinks we must have insects under the wood that are attracting the birds but they are also nesting in the holes. The birds are nuthatchs but we also have had flickers at theh house last year. the house was build in 1979. Do we replace the cedar or can we apply a product to eliminate the insects?
irish spring soap works for wood peckers may work for nuthatches, you would have to talk to an exterminator about the bugs, and you may have to replace a few boards.

we have a product called woodwash which will remove the grey color but to keep it looking natural you will have to put a finish on it we recomend sikkens finishes if you call us we can give you more information Thanks

I have a fellow who has quite a bit of 1 inch x 12foot x 5inch red oak tongue and groove broads for sale and claims they where made in 1945. He wants a value for the age of the wood. Could you tell my if anyone should pay a jacked up price for this supposed age of wood and how can I tell if it is as old as he claims.
There is no way to tell how old lumber is, and we don't believe that lumber appreciates over time oak how ever gets harder with age and is tough to work with.

Hi, I am looking at finishing cedar soffit installed under a covered deck and cedar shakes installed on our exterior wall that is protected by a covered deck. Do we need to wait for summer to stain? What product do you recommend for the soffit if we want to maintain a natural look, but are also concerned with longevity. What product is best for the shakes - we were considering a semi-transparent stain. Should we be concerned about potential weathering if left for a couple of months untreated? Thanks in advance for your help!
we recommend sikkens cetol log and siding for the shakes 2 coats should last 3 - 5 years, and cetol 1 for the soffit which if doesn't get any sunlight should only have to do 2 coats and not have to re-coat and yes you should wait until it warms up more before staining both product need the temperature to be above 10 degrees for at least 8 hours, the shakes may weather a little but when coated will come back to life.

We applied Sikkens cetol 1 and cetol 23 to our cedar garage doors and the front of our house about 5-6 years ago. We would like to reapply but it is quite weathered. Last time, we had had a different product on and removed it using Stripex and Woodwash. The instructions for maintenance with the Sikkens says to use a solution of TSP, bleach and water, leave it on for 20 minutes while scrubbing with a hard brush, then powerwash and let dry before reapplying the Cetol 23. Is the TSP solution adequate on relatively weathered wood, or should we use the Stripex and woodwash to go to the original wood?
If the wood is weathered [turning greyish] Stripex must be used to remove the remainig Sikkens first and then Woodwash to blast off the grey.Using a power washer for both products will help

I've been doing research into whether a spruce/pine/fir T+G would be recommended or even possible for use as an exterior cladding in Calgary. Depending on the sealer, sun exposure, etc. I'm wondering if you can make any suggestions regarding the use of spruce/pine/fir in an exterior application. If not, are there any lighter coloured woods that would be suitable for exterior wood siding? Kind Regards.
Using them products are fine but I recommend coating all 6 sides of the board prior to installation... in fact we suggest that when using any species of wood

I would like to know when an indoor cedar newel(post) is stained would it be prudent to sand the cedar before staining to open the pores or would the sanding just clog the pores? Can I simply stain the post as is? Off topic is another question. I have a cedar deck that gets sunblasted on the second level. What would be the best way to keep the wood from going cedar gray? Thank you for your time
Interior wood does not require sanding.Your sun blasted deck does.Sand the surface with 80 grit sandpaper to take off gray wood and open the pores, allow two days for deck to recover and apply your finish.

Our existing deck rails are built with 6" x 2" (actual size) rough cut cedar boards. Is this product still available? Is pressure treatment available in this product? Is there any truth to the statement that todays cedar is second rate to the old growth products of years ago? A contractor would be doing this work for our condo complex (19 units). Could you give me an idea of cost per lineal foot on these products. Thanks, Carl
2x6 rough cedar measures 1 3/4 x 5 3/4 and is still old growth wood. Second growth cedar is not as rot resistant as old growth but still better than pressure treated spruce because it is less likely to cup and split. Cost is $1.65/ft

Hi, I am looking for sauna package or raw materials for a 5'x7'x7' sauna. I would want 1x4 T&G smooth for the walls, ceiling and floor. This will be an outside sauna and I will be building the base structure myself. If you stock these kits what would the price be - I am assuming these kits would come with an upper and lower bench and guard for the heater? Also, I would need a price for the heater unit (whatever size you would recommend) as a part of this package. I am very handy and have all of the right tools and know how to deal with the raw material as well - could I have both options priced? Finally, would you be able to ship to Yellowknife? Either the kit or the raw materials required? Regards, Vince

Is there any special Vapour barrier that I need for the walls and finally what size heater do I need. I would like a heater that I can load up with rocks and throw water on. Thank-you: Derrik
Yes you can build your wall from 2x4 and hang the door on it... The rough opening is 26x74... Outside walls need everything a regular outside wall would need but the inside wall only needs the reflective foil and the tongue and groove v-joint.For that particular size of sauna you will need a 9 kw heater at $810.00 (controls, rocks) included

The hail made an end to the vinyl siding on my daughter's house, and she is considering replacing it with horizontal beveled cedar siding. Would the 8" (covering 6") X 8' be the most economical, and what is the cost? Either by the board, or by the covered square foot?
11/16x 8 rough face bevel siding is a popular choice and is quite inexpensive by comparison to other sizes and grades. It is 1.45 per lineal ft or 2.90 per square ft

Hi our sauna is 30+ years old and the wood is dull and the heater does not work. Do you sell wood conditioners/oil/stain etc for sauna wood? Also how much would your "standard" heater cost?
Very often cedar can be restored with a deep sanding, that should restore the wood and bring back the cedar smell. Most people enjoy the aroma the cedar gives off when exposed to heat and moisture and therefore you don't want to add a anything to the walls that would block that smell. Heater and control prices will vary depending on the size of room you are trying to heat. They start at $700 and go up from there

Hello I have just had a cedar fence built. I would basically like to just maintain the natural cedar look for the fence. I have 2 questions. What is a good product to use to help to protect and maintain the color and look? And when should I apply this. I had one neighbor tell me that I should wait until spring unti lthe boards are dryer. I had another neighbour tell me that I should paint the fence asap. Help I am confused?? Thanks and I look forward to your reply. Mike Johnson mej@shaw.ca
Once fencing is installed the boards should dry quickly, you will notice the boards shrinking slightly after completion. Two weeks of dry weather is all you need on normal rough 1 side fencing

When applying cedar siding to a house - should both sides of the board be stained? Or just the side facing the outside?
Moisture can occur between siding and paper on house therefore whenever possible coat all six sides of siding before install

Hi, I have rough red cedar planks on the exterior of my house. I would like to keep the color before it goes grey Can I use a clear varathane? What brand would you recommend and how would I apply? Many Thanks
When staining anything outside you can use a semi transparent stain but you must have a color base in it to help fend off the graying process... products that are clear will give very little to no protection from U.V rays. We carry the Sikkens line of products and have had great success with them over the last 30 years. Feel free to call us if you have any other questions on this matter or any other building material needs...Thanks

Date Posted:  07/10/2010
What should I use to seal my new cedar fence boards? Which solid stain or paint do you suggest? We'll be using white.
Sikkens or another top quality stain is always preferred... Calbot is another fine stain

I carry both 5/4 and 2 inch s4s the 5/4 is more rounded over than the 2 inch, and i have 16 ft in stock 5/4x6 19.04 ea 2x6 23.84 ea

I just put up a cedar fence and want to stain it to keep its natural color. I was told that I had to wait 3 months to do this. Is this correct? Also, how long does it take for cedar to start to grey...if I have to wait till spring I'm nervous that the cedar will be greying. Thanking you in advance, Theresa Greene ps - my cedar was purchased at your store...it's beautiful!
There is not a correct amount of time to wait, with the rain we have had i would wait 2 - 3 weeks. If you have to wait until spring you will notice a slight greying which can be cleaned up by power washing.

I am planning a pergola for over my patio. I plan on using 6x6x10s for my posts (4). My question, I want to use 2'x6'x16' cedar placed 1' apart on 2'x6'x 10' headers, two on each set of posts. The posts will be 15' apart with no headers and ten foot apart for the headers. Will the 2'x6'x16' start sagging over time?
Over that span it will most likely sag

I am about to start on my 4th cedar lined hope chest for the youngest of my 4 daughters. They are built using mortise and tenon construction and raised panels and doweled lengths for lid and panels. Previously I have used clear fir, oak and mahogany. My Question ; Would clear cedar work for me in the total construction or is it too soft for this type of construction, and if so would it finish nicely with stain and varathane.
Clear cedar would work fine for this project.Despite the fact that as you pointed out it is softer than the above woods you have been using.Several coats of varathane will give it strength.I would use 1 1/2 thickness for walls

My deck has been completed out of cedar and it is starting to look like the weather in calgary is not going to cooperate. Is it a problem to wait till next summer to stain or should i put something else on to protect it? Thanks for your help
Leaving a cedar deck unfinished over winter is better than applying a finish to wood that is to wet to accept it.Next spring your deck will have to be sanded with 60-80 grt sandpaper to clean off the gray or patina color and bring it back to its original color. If your deck is close to the ground and your not sure it is dry enough simply place a rubber mat on the deck during a hot day {in sunlight hopefully}and have a peek under the mat after about 30 min.If you see moisture then you will know it needs more time to dry.

Is it safe to use treated wood for a raised vegetable garden? Is cedar safer than treated wood. I believe ACQ is used in treated wood today. Henry
ACQ wood is copper based product with other chemicals that will break down and go into the soil when the wood begins to decay. These chemicals are added to regular spruce or fir boards by sliding a lift into a air tight space and creating a vacuum to draw the liquid into the wood.If you have ever sawed through a treated 2x4 you can see that the chemicals do not penetrate very deep at all.Cedar on the other hand has natural rot resisting oils all the way through the wood and will out last pressure treated wood. I would recommend cedar for your vegetable garden.

We recently build a deck with 5/4 x 5" cedar decking on a treated frame 8" above grade. We are looking for a product that will soak into the cedar, keep it from greying, keep the cedar looking as natural as possible and won't peel off. What do you recommend?
Decking that is only 8 inch above grade will require 1 coat of Sikkens SRD probably every spring if its facing south, anything two feet and less is considered poorly ventilated and we would of recommended one coat on all six sides of the board before install.

Hi, I have recently purchased 36 4" X 6" cedar fence posts from you. I've already set them in the ground with approx 3 bags of concrete for each post. I have not started building the rails and slats yet. After two days of completing setting the posts and the first rainfall, one of the posts started warping. It is now 3 inches warped from bottom to top (like a banana). This is the only post that has warped so far, all the others are straight. It's been two weeks now. Any suggestions on how to straighten the one warped post before I continue construction?
I dont know of any ways to straighten your post... Im afraid it will have to be replaced

Hello. I will be coming in within the next few weeks to order the clubhouse shed. RIght now I am beginning the process of preparing the area where the shed will be going. Would you recommend putting down and levelling gravel crush as a base? If so how many inches will be needed and would you recommend tamping the base or would it be ok just leaving it unpacked and level? Would you recommend spacing cement patio stones on the base as well or would just a gravel crush base provide sufficient support and drainage? Thanks for your time,
You can use just about anything as a base. 3 or 4 inches of crushed gravel works really well. The cement pads have also been a favorite with our customers. Some also use 4x4 sleepers to elevate the shed to keep a bit of air flow under the shed. as far as the gravel goes, I think most are not packing it down ... thanks

I am building a shed out at a rural acreage and thought I might side it with rough cut lumber for cost savings. Do you carry a 1x8x8 in rough cut siding or have any thoughts on a cost effective material to side it?
We have many different grades and sizes in stock. 11/16 x 8 inch rough face knotty bevel siding is very popular. It is roughly three dollars a square foot and has a very nice finish that takes stain very well.

I am looking to keep the natural red cedar color on my new deck. (installed yesterday) 1. do I need to let the wood dry out prior to sealing or staining? (if so how long?) 2. what does a stain do to the wood compared to what a Thompson water seam type product? Do you recommend one over the other given my stated desire at the top?
We have a variety of products to use on a deck but there are a few things to consider before you choose one... For instance, the height of you deck from the ground, how well ventilated it is and whether or not there is much of a gap between boards. There are flat finishes and satin finishes and they both have different colors to choose from. You want to use a product that has color in it to protect it from the sun. If the product being used doesnt have a color, the wood will silver from UV damage.

hello I am doing some work with 2 inch x 6 inch (2"x6") material and would like to make a water tight joint and I am thinking cove and bead. would #18-130 and 82-515 be a a good match? I am building a circular cedar hot tub and figured that would be the best way to go. Do you have any suggestions? as well do you have wedge tongue and groove bits for 2" material as well? would Half round and round nose bits would compliment each other to make a large a ball joint? such as these from freud? half round 82-120 round nose 18-138 or is there another combination I can use thanks Corey p.s. any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
As far as material goes, you might want to see what we have in stock... some of the terms and numbers you use may not be the same as ours... if you have any profile pics of these products that would certainly help us in determining the the price and availability... feel free to call with any questions... most of the material you are talking about is manned by hot tub companies or by mills they are associated with.   We are looking at using the Cetol® SRD product on our cedar fence. Would you recommend application prior to construction to ensure all sides are coated / stained? Should the wood be left to weather for a few days prior to applying this product?
The fencing will not dry sitting in a lift, once the boards are spaced out so that air can get at them then they will dry fairly fast.Yes it is a great idea to coat all six sides of the wood before you construct your fence, especially the bottom end of the fence board which will be close to the ground

Our property has settled since our home was built in 2003. The backyard fence is beginning to lean toward our neighbours yard slightly but enough to affect both of our fence gates. My fence gate width has widened, my neighbours fence gate width narrowed. My fence gate won't latch because the fence posts have separated to wide. My neighbours gate won't close because his fence gate width is too narrow. I think you get the picture. Do you sell some sort of Fence Gate Header or Arbour that I can attach to the top of my fence posts on either side of my fence gate? Right now I have chain on both posts connected by a dual bolt connector tightened to keep the posts vertically parallel. This works but looks awful. Need something more permanent and appealing to the eye. Preferably a wood solution. The plan would be to attach the Gate Header or Gate Arbour then remove the chain support. Please advise.
We dont carry a particular product to fix your problem... we do have arbours but they arent made of materials that would take the strain... We do however carry some larger dimension material that coul;d be used in building some sort of arbour or gate header.

Hi, I'm looking to build adirondack chairs as a project. What type of cedar would you recommend. Clear grade kiln dried or will deck/fence material suffice (Is there such thing as clear grade decking boards). The other question is dimensions. I require about 55 linear ft. of 1 x 6 and 5 of 1 x 8 per chair (I figure maybe 10% waste) . So far my choices are: 1 x 6 (i.e. dressed size 3/4 x 5/12) not much room with having to deal with flatness etc. or 5/4 decking dimensioned down to get square and flat material or rough lumber. I don't have any issues with jointing/planing. I realize there will be price differences between the choices mentioned so if you could throw your ideas out and pricing it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
We sell those chairs and they are built out of 5/4 x6 knotty and clear cedar but finding 8 inch wide boards can be quite tricky,2x8 is no problem

I am looking at building a large cedar fence (15 - 8ft panels). Do you recommend fence builders to install your product? How much roughly would this cost for a 6 ft high cedar fence without the lattice? Thanks.
For a basic cedar fence you are looking at $16 to $17 dollars a running foot. There are many ways to do this but this is a 3 rail fence with regular rough one side fence boards... for more information feel free to call us at 403-243-5720 or visit the shop... We are located at 404 42 avenue S.E. Thanks

I am going to build a cedar deck and am wondering what type of screws to use. I want to make sure that there is no staining of the cedar but am screwing into treated joists.
The best screws to use would be a stainless steel screw, though they are expensive..We also carry a ruspert screw that works well for cedar and it's half the price of the stainless steel screw.

Hello, the company that I work for is trying to build several fences for decoration for this years Stampede and what they're looking for are several 8' planks of wood (about 70-80 planks) with the bark still attached on the face side -- to give it that rustic look; we're not quite sure what the wood is called or if that's availible at all. And if that is availible, is it possible to give a price? Thank you!
We would be glad to get pricing on such an item but need a bit more info... Please call Ron or Brad and we can get all the details and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks Cedar Shop 403-243-5720

Hi, I was wondering where I might be able to find fluted box newels appropriate for use outdoors as posts for a deck at the cedar shop. I'm including a link to a picture of exactly what I am looking for: http://www.scotiastairs.com/photo-gallery/hardwood-box-newels.jpg Any help that you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, have a wonderful day!
We don't carry those particular types of newels... we have a turned treated post but its nothing like the type you are looking for... I would try a place like artistic stairs for something like that... I'm not sure if they carry such an item but they may be able to point you in the right direction. Hopefully this will help you out. Thanks

Heard you ad on the radio. Good stuff. 3 questions. 1. I am building a new deck this summer on 2 levels both close to grade. I am planning pressure treated under carriage with cedar decking. Should I stain the cedar or not? 2. should I look at composite instead and if so are there any deals on that material? 3. Why would I but from you guys rather than say a Totem? Thanks RB
Cedar is a very resilient wood so its not necessary to stain it if you choose not too ... It will however turn a driftwood gray which a lot of our customers like. If you choose to stain your deck and its at ground level (or close to it) use a one coat stain only because it will allow moisture transferee though the finish without the flaking or peeling. Multi coat systems have a tendency to flake or peel at ground level because of moisture. The composite materials are the way to go if you want little maintenance and are looking for something a little different. There is a new timber-tech product out this year that is a third less the cost than its regular product... its $5.35 a square foot and the cedar 5/4x6 is $2.60 a square foot. We pride ourselves on having top quality lumber and our prices speak for them selves... Feel free to call us if you have any questions or need any prices. Thanks for the email and we hope to hear from you in the very near future...

This isn't really a expert question... A friend of mine got some off cuts (for burning in a firepit, I love the smell) from you guys last summer from, he says, a bin in the back. Do you guys still have this? Thanks.
Yes, we do still have the fire wood bin in the back..Sometimes it's full sometimes it's not..It's the the luck of the draw..You can come anytime to take a look..;)

I have a whole bunch of questions, I guess I'll start off by telling you that I'm working on builidng a cedar strip kayak or two so I'm looking for long clear wood 1) What species to you sell, I'm looking at western red and northern white, or both, but I'm also open to other variaties. 2) Is the clear wood available raw cut? 3) What are the actual measurements of the regular 1" x 4" standard boards? (ie how much is taken by the plainer) 4) I see by the other questions(yes I read them first) that you recommend 1x4 at $2.20/ft. for cost efficency is that price still accurate and is that for raw cut or standard, and I'm assuming that's for western red? 5) Out of curiosity (if the price is close it may still be better for me personally to use larger wood) what is the price of wider boards ie 1x6, 1x12 Thanks
We carry western red cedar smooth 4 sides kiln dried clear 1x4 actual measurements are 3/4x2 1/2 @$2.20/ft. 3/4x5 1/2[1x6] costs $4.48/ft and 1x12 will cost $10.84/ft. Western red cedar is more rot resistant and stronger than northern white.

When I initially sanded my new cedar deck before applying the stain, I didn't go down far enough to remove all of the silvery weathering. As a result, the try color and pattern of the cedar did not come out. I'm going to re-sand and stain this year and wonder if you have suggestions on the best equipment to use. Specifically, am I OK using a residential grade belt sander. If so, what grit paper should I use to make sure I get the weathering sanded off but not too rough? Otherwise, what type of sander and grit should I use? Thanks...
The belt sander works just fine, use 60 grit first and then finish with 80 grit.No stain will hold up any length of time if the wood has any silver or gray sun damage on it so be sure to get it all off. If you have spots that are hard to reach with a sander there is a product called wood wash that you apply to the damaged area, let sit for 15 min. and power wash off.

Hello! You we recommended to us by a customer of yours. My question is this. We have a new Cedar deck going in and I want to maintain the natural look of the cedar for as long as possible. What products do you recommend to prepare and protect the cedar deck and the cedar privacy wall (fence basically)? Thank you very much. Doug
Sikkens makes a finish called Cetol Dek Finish that works great but only if the deck is properly cured and sanded with 60 to 80 grt sandpaper. Most cedar is sold green, meaning it can have a moisture content of up to 35% water in its wood cells. If you are building a deck 2 to 3 ft off the ground prestain the bottom of the deck boards before construction, then wait two to three weeks before you sand ,and then apply 2 coats onto the face. You will notice the gaps in between the deck boards begin to expand and that lets you know that the moisture is coming out and ready for an oil based finish. Fencing and vertical areas do not have to be sanded but still should be cured one to two weeks.

Hi, Im a carpenter who suffers from a pretty sever allergy to , everyones favourite wood, Cedar. Have you guys ever heard of this before, know of anything I can do, other than not use the product? Thank you
We've seen this several times over the years... it's not uncommon. Most allergic reactions that we've seen were minor and they continued to use the product but did have to use a respirator in some cases... usually when doing alot of sanding.Other than that I'm afraid I have no other answer for you... thanks for your question

hey i was lookin at building a cedar strip canoe, wondering what yuor 1x6 cedar was worth. i was looking at an 18foot piece is that possible, if not 16 foot might work, also are there any color variations i would like to throw in a few contrasting colors.
Clear kiln dried cedar is available in many tints of color, since you are going to be ripping the 1x6 into strips then 1x4 will be more cost effective 1x4 costs $2.20/ft.We may or may not have those long lengths in stock, allow 2 to 3 weeks to bring in.

Is it possible to get 4x6 smooth or sanded cedar beams? (website only has rough)
4x6 beams and larger come only with a rough finish. This allows moisture to slowly escape from the beam.Smooth wood traps the moisture inside and will cause more checking {small splitting} in order for the moisture to get out. It should also be noted that a rough finish will hold a stain or paint much longer and provides a rich rustic look.

About 10 years ago a window installer came close to matching it with 3/4" X 10.5" material. Would you have something that would come close and what would it be per foot? Depending upon the price I might take up to 200'. 403-554-1086 cell . . . Kevin

I built a deck out of cedar last summer but never finished it. We have a dog and so the deck has got quite muddy and has lost some of its color. What is the best way to clean the deck up and then finish it. thanks
If the wood is starting to turn gray then it has to be cleaned with a product called woodwash $18.75/gallon per 150 sq/ft. This biodegradable product gets sprayed onto the deck, let sit for 10 minutes and then remove with a power washer.Allow the deck 10 days to dry and recover then apply your finnish

I am planning to build a new cedar deck. to make it easier would like to stain decking before instalation. My question is should I stain only one side or could I do both sides?
It's always best if you can stain all sides of the board..That way no moisture will enter the wood from the underside that can cause the stain to flake and peel.

Why does some cedar have the cedar smell and not others. I would like to finish the inside of a cabin with it. Is it available?
Cedar can loose some of its scent over the course of time but when lightly sanded, you bring some of the natural oils back to the surface and open up new pores to release the scent back into the room. This is particularly true when using aromatic cedar. As for the second part of your question, we have many different styles of sidings that could be used on the inside of a cabin. Tongue and groove v-joint would be the most common. They are available in both 4 inch and 6 inch widths. Feel free to call us for a square foot prices based on the amounts you may need. Thanks for your interest in our products and we hope to hear from you in the near future.

Hi there, Do you have in stock, 4x4 or 4x8 cedar lattice with the 1" privacy openings - you know the lattice with the smaller see through holes?
The lattice with that small a hole is called privacy plus and was usually done in much thinner strips of lath. We stopped carrying that product many years ago because they couldn't stand the test of time. We do however carry a few others that are much thicker(3/8-3/4 inch thick lath)depending on your personal tastes! (1 1/2-2 1/4 INCH OPENING). We carry a few different grades of 4x4 and usually have so 4x8 in stock but none this time of year. we can order just about anything if you need it. Feel free to call us if you have any questions. Thanks

hi folks, i have an 19 year old cedar sided home. i've only been here for 9 months but i don't believe it's been maintained to any degree over the years. the siding is approx 12" wide and runs horizontally. it has darkened over the years and i'd like to restore it back to a nice original light orange / light red finish with a clear coating. can you tell me how to start?... meaning... "do i power wash it or sand blast it or replace it? if i can re-finish it, what coating do i need to re-apply? can you send me back a 'step by step'?? thanks in advance, Curt.
Pressure washing may clean it up depending on how long its been overdue for a recoat... Sometimes you will have to have it sand or soda blasted. After this process, you will most likely want a 2 or 3 coat finish applied. Depending on your exposure, this will give you 5-7 years... If you want to replace this siding, it is in the 4.50 per square foot range... 15/16x12 knotty rough face bevel. Feel free to call us if you have any more questions. Thanks

About 6ft long.Do you have any plans or suggestions? I have built an out-door skating rink for one of the tenants children, and therefore am looking for weather protection with the bench. ...Thank You,cliffo
ah, difficult to answer without pictures, but imagine a 6 ft bench that is supported by 4 4x4 posts that are 8 ft tall, besides supporting the bench the posts can used as anchors to nail on 1x6 tongue and groove cedar on both the sides and back for protection from wind, the posts supporting the front of bench could be 1 ft shorter to give a single pitch for water to run off. Best to come on down and we can show you on paper

i have a customer who wants me to stain a new cedar fence they just put in. the guy who installed it told them to wait to stain it (let it weather a few months). winter is almost here and i would like to know if i can actually stain it right away or is it best to let it weather and turn gray then power wash it and stain it in the spring. i have read posts about "mill glaze" and im wondering if that will be a factor when im planning to use an oil stain
The fence can be stained 2 weeks or so after installation, provided the weather is going to be above 10 degrees when using oil based products. If you choose to wait until spring and there is evidence of some greying then the boards will have to be power washed.

I'm building a rather large gate to match a client's existing fence and was wondering what your opinion is of the maximum span for a cedar gate. Right now I'm looking at about 9.5' for each side (19' total) fastened to a 6x6 buried 4.5' deep (sonotubed with 3 bags of quikrete in each) supported by a wheel at the end of each gate. Just wanted to make sure that I'm not making a big mistake by building something this wide. Thanks for the advice.
the only thing i might be concerned about the gate is wider that a regular fence panel and might sag in the middle otherwise there is nothing wrong with building that size of gate.

Hello Cedar Shop: We are making a walk in closet and would like to line it with cedar. Is there such a thing as cedar beadboard sheets? Do you have them? If not, what do you recommend for lumber? I am thinking 1x6. Thanks. Heather & Ray
There is no cedar bead board unfortunately, but we do have 1x4 and 1x6 t&g cedar in both knotty and clear.

Should we be finishing our cedar deck in this Calgary snowy weather? The final construction on our deck will be done this week by our landscaper. The concern is that if left over the winter untreated it will grey, and create a look we really don't want. The look we would like to acheive is a two tone stain, a darker outside edge on two planks and skirt. and a lighter inside. What options do we have? I am so very confused.
You can wait to stain until spring your will only slightly weather and we do have a product that will bring the color back if it does grey to much

I have a cedar fence that was installed 2 years ago. I have not stained it and was planning to let it fade and age naturally. I am now thinking that I may want to stain it. I like the look of natural stained cedar. Can I stain my fence after leaving it unstained for a few years. Some parts have started to grey but it still looks good when it is wet. What do you recommend?
Yes you can stain, as long as it's not completely grey. If it is you will need to use a product called woodwash which will remove the grey, than you can finish your fence. Thanks

I like to cook on the bbq using cedar planks (cedar plank salmon for example) Can I use cedar fence boards and just cut them up. Is the cedar fence board clean and free of any chemicals, or have they been washed with anything? The cedar boards that can be bought at the bbq shops are too thin and very expensive.
Yes, you can use any cedar. Cedar has it's own natural oils in it so it doesn't get washed with any chemicals.

Hi, we attempted to stain our deck with a Behr product and don't like it at all. Is sanding the easiest and safest way to get that stain off? The deck installer originally recommended your outfit but it is a ways away from us so we went to home depot. If not from your shop, where would you recommend we purchase from? We like the look of wet pressure treated wood and would like a natural looking stain on the brown tone side of things. Thanks for your help. Robin
The easiest way to remove a finish is with a stripping agent. We carry a bio degradeable produt called stripex, Apply and power wash off.

I am interested in buying some red cedar to manufacture flutes. Do you supply 2 X 4's that will be virtually knot free and do you also provide a service to have the said lumber ripped on site. Thanks.
